Maybe a picnic would've been better

Imagine a day with your grandparents and loved ones. A day of fun and laughter, especially treasured because you've been away from each other for so long. A day for celebration, it being the 84th birthday of your grandfather. Everything goes great until someone suggests you go eat dinner ...

Dining al fresco seemed like a nice thing to do as it was nice out at The Forks. After a short wait, we finally got our much-coveted seating outside at Brannigan's.

The food left much to be desired. Much of it was quite ho-hum - ok, but not special; edible but not memorable. For example, I had a salad topped with grilled chicken. The chicken was great, but all I could remember was that the salad was tasteless iceberg lettuce,
still damp and obviously had been overly spun to the point that the leaves were bruised.

But the bad service was inexcusable. Granted that the place was packed that Thursday and our waiter seemed harassed. More plates came in and I immediately noticed how the plate edges were marred by fingerprints and food splatters. We couldn't start eating right away, as they ran out of knives. But we waited for so long ... no knives ... so those with ribs, fish and chicken suffered eating only with a fork ... my smart sister ate her ribs with her hands. Needed another plate, and it was given ... damp. Oh, and those knives never came. I saw that other tables resigned themselves to eating without them too!

In any other occasion, we probably would've complained loudly. But it was someone's birthday and complaining would have definitely put a damper on everyone's spirits. We were in the middle of sharing a slice of cake when there was a sudden yet brief downpour. We ended up laughing about it, but when the bill came, we were resigned to the fact that we'd be paying much more than we'd wanted to for the quality of the food and the bad service.

Take my advice, don't bother eating here, especially during the dinner rush. Bring along some sandwiches and sit along the river, enjoy the breeze, and enjoy the company.
