In love with my papa!

I have a new papa! (If you’re in the Philippines, or at least know enough Filipino slang you know what I mean.) I have a definite sweet tooth and Beard Papa’s creampuffs assuage those tastebuds in the right way, on a more mellow note.

Laying my eyes on these creampuffs, I couldn’t imagine why they were pretty expensive. Imagine, 50 pesos for a plain one and 55 pesos if it’s topped with chocolate and all the trimmings.

When I tasted one, I never questioned the price again. It is such a small price to pay for a taste of heaven. The pastry is warm, crisp and short. What a contrast when a few bites into it, you get to that cool creamy custard with a hint of vanilla. The fact that it is sized like a small burger makes it all worthwhile – more than enough for one person to indulge.

I’ve tried the chocolate slathered ones too, but feel that the chocolate detracts too much from that yummy custard, like having too much of a good thing! I still prefer them plain.

A comforting thought is that you always get fresh cream puffs. The filling is pumped into the puff from a strange-looking device. Getting that heavenly custard in only upon ordering keeps the pastry from getting soggy and ensures that it remains nice and cool. Also, they use real vanilla bean pods – not the more-commonly used vanilla extract (when I learned this, I realized why the cream puffs are expensive).

Beard Papa is a Japanese franchise so you know that they take issues of freshness, hygienic handling, and the signature subtle sweetness very seriously. Generally, too, I’ve found the staff to be very courteous, and they always remind you to eat the cream puffs right away. Take their advice because soggy cream puffs aren’t a pretty thing (though they do taste really good still).

My addiction to these cream puffs is barely under control. Each time I step into a mall where there is a Beard Papa store, it takes every ounce of myself control not to buy one. I want one NOW with my tea!
