Yummy mechanically reclaimed meat!

The last episode of Jamie Oliver’s School Dinners put off some kids off chicken nuggets. How? Shock tactics! Jamie demonstrated what actually went into the much beloved chicken nuggets - shaped into anything a child's heart desires. Ground up chicken carcasses, excess chicken skin, and a bunch of coloring, flavor enhancers, and binders. Yum yum.

Here in the Philippines, I am not sure that the tactics would work. We eat anything – from intestines, to chicken heads – and we don’t even disguise what it is. Go to the nearest kanto and look what they are barbequeing up. They probably have betamax (blood squares), helmet (chicken heads), adidas (chicken feet). Saunter off to the next store and they have chicharong bulaklak (crunchy deep-fried intestines). Yum yum.

But I digress. Anyway, you may want think twice before ordering this at McDo or reaching for that oh-so-easy to cook (and chow) packet of chicken nuggets. Take a look at the label. What are the first two things listed? Ok, chicken. But according to this, a caveat: "unless the label specifically says it's made with all-white meat, then the product contains a combination of white meat, dark meat and chicken skin. Dark meat is far higher in fat and lower in certain nutrients than white meat, and the skin is notoriously high in fat." Yum yum.

Read this and find out that a chicken nuggets is simply NOT breaded chicken!

Read this and find out why the chicken nugget is the penultimate symbol of the way we eat "the epitome of our 21st-century system of globalised, industrial food production." Hooray for globalization!

Photo: The photo isn't mine. It belongs to this site. I think it captures aptly what that yummy little cube is all about!
